Jeseniky Protected Area
Forested mountains with rounded ridges, springs of living water flowing through deep valleys, centuries-old forests turning into harsh mountain tundra on the ridges, stone seas, glacial crags with falling avalanches, unbridled mountain streams with silvery-white waterfalls and clear mossy pools, mysterious peat bogs surrounded by legends about elves, flowery foothill meadows divided by boundaries, complex labyrinths of underground passages leading deep underground, long mountain villages with old cottages nestled in the valleys, that is the Jeseniky Mountains.

The Jeseniky Protected Landscape Area is one of the largest protected areas in the Czech Republic. It is located on the northeastern border of the Czech Republic in the Eastern Sudetes and occupies almost the entire Hrubý Jeseník mountain range. The most valuable areas in the Jeseniky Protected Landscape Area are the areas of high-altitude forestlessness and the adjacent spruce forests. The Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area is one of the most forested protected areas, and in addition to the spruce forests, the preserved fragments of beech forests are also worth noting. Important objects of protection also include peat bogs and mountain streams, meadows, rock formations, rare species of plants and animals, but also architecture and the harmoniously shaped landscape by man. To better protect the most valuable pieces of local nature, 32 small-area specially protected areas have been declared so far. 14 European Sites of Importance (ESI) have been designated in the Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area. Furthermore, the Jeseníky bird area is defined in most of the PLA, in which the field cicada and the wood crane are protected. The area is covered by the Jeseníky Natural Water Accumulation Protected Area (CHOPAV). There are also several village heritage zones here. The Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area was declared in 1969 on an area of 740 km2 with the aim of protecting the natural wealth and preserved landscape of the Jeseníky Mountains. The most valuable and at the same time most attractive tourist sites in the Jeseníky PLA are protected in the national nature reserves of Praded, Rejviz, Serak-Keprnik and Raseliniste Skritek.
